B90 Week Nine Check-in

After falling behind a couple different times, I am pretty much caught back up. I am half way through day 56's reading right now (okay, not TECHNICALLY caught up). LOL I am planning to finish up Day 56 before I go to work, and do Day 57 tonight after work, I may try taking my bible to work tonight too.

Since Happy Housewife shared her Bible Bag in the Check-in Post I figured I'd share my set up too. Though no pretty pictures!! sorry!

I have a nice bag that I carry, except at work, it stays in my car then! It will fit all my own little stuff and my bible notebook. It would fit my bible if I didn't have it in a cover. But I LOVE my protective pink cover for my super soft bible. So I just carry my bible. :) I tuck my pretty pink pencil into the spiral of my bible journal and throw it in my bag, grab my bible and off I go! No highlighters for me, I just underline in pencil. I have post-it tabbies to keep track of my ending spot for the day, and have even pre-marked this Bible (since it is NOT the official B90 bible). I like the visual though of the little tabbie showing me that I am there! I jot down my favorite verses in my journal after I underline them in my Bible. It's a great system for me. :) Maybe sometime this week I'll take pictures and do a new post for everyone!

Using Post Crossing for Homeschooling

I have been a member of Post Crossing for 35 Days. I have sent a total of 11 cards with my 12th dropping in the mail in less than an hour, and 7 have been received. I have personally received 4 postcards. The countries I have sent to or received from are:

-Belarus
-China
-Finland
-Germany
-Indonesia
-Japan
-Netherlands
-Poland
-Russia
-United States

A few weeks ago, I posted about trying to get my BFF to let her three older homeschooled children to do Post Crossing. I truly feel it could be a wonderful way of exploring the world, and finding a reason to study a country.

Today, when I told her where my newest postcard was going, she gave me FABULOUS news. SHE HAS AGREED!!!! She has determined a method that she feels will allow her and the children to utilize Post Crossing for their World, and possible US, History and Geography. I am extremely excited by this!! I will, as previously stated, be footing the expense of the postcards and postage, but I consider it a PRIVILEGE to be able to share in the experience with them. I LOVE sending and receiving my postcards. And I am sure they will too!! I hope as the year progresses they find the joy in not just the postcards but the study of the countries as well. :)

Well, I must go get ready for work. Hoping this joy and bliss I feel right now will carry me through the day. I am excited for the end of my shift when BFF and I are going to go do a bit of shopping for this new "unit" of study and when I get home I get to register them online for Post Crossing. This weekend, one at a time, I will help them fill in their profiles, and do a Lego avatar picture for them. :)

HAPPY POSTCROSSING!!!!!

Book Review: Forever, by Karen Kingsbury

Forever, by Karen Kingsbury

I really loved ONE thing about this book... the list of Elizabeth's rules for marriage that are in the letter that John mails to his son Luke. So my review consists SOLELY of a copy of this list.

"Elizabeth's rules for marriage:

1. God has you here to serve one another. Love acted out is serving.
2. Women need respect and nurturing. Love your wife so she knows you'd lay your life down for her. Continue to date her and admire her. Share a hobby-find something you can do to have fun together.
3. Laugh often.
4. Be patient. Love crumbles quickly under the weight of unmet expectations.
5. Spend more time trying to fix yourself than your spouse.
6. Keep short accounts. The Bible says, "Do not let the sun go down while you are angry." Make it a habit to forgive.
7. Determine up front that divorce is not an option.
8. Learn about love languages. Not all people show love or receive it the same way. You want a back rub and your spouse wants a clean kitchen. The love languages are fairly simple: acts of service, time, physical touch, gifts, and words of affirmation. Learn them. Love is better received when it's in the language that person speaks.
9. Words of affirmation are a love language for all men.
10. Men are born to be leaders. He cannot lead unless she gives him the confidence to do so. If you love your husband, build him up. Confident men do not seek love outside the home. "

I think these are beautiful rules for LIFE, not just marriage.

Soft, fuzzy yarn

>> Monday, August 16, 2010

So BFF asked me yesterday why I don't knit anymore. That was an easy one to answer actually, I hurt my wrist about 2 1/2 years ago, and ever since then, knitting has been painful. Some days I can knit for an hour, some days, only a row or two. But, crocheting didn't seem to have that effect on my wrist. Truth is, I haven't done any crocheting since early last fall at least, but PROBABLY later than that. :(

I was thinking more and more about it. I should really get back into it. I have a HUGE, and I do mean HUGE, yarn stash. A TON of wool, lots of super soft Caron Eco-Soft Acrylic that is nice against the skin. The girls are frequently fighting over the blanket I made a couple years ago, dubbed the funky chunky blanket. Maybe it's time to pull the hook back out.

Stay tuned for news. I am not certain yet, I really have been concentrating on reading. But maybe something I can do when reading isn't working for some reason. :)

Challenges: 100+ Books, Support Your Local Library, Finish That Series, Summer reading program at the Library

I loved this book, but just don't have it in me to write the review... So here is the description from the christianbooks.com website:

Trina Muller has always had a passion for healing abandoned and injured animals. Her parents encourage this tenderness towards God's creatures until Trina confesses her dream of going to veterinary college. Why can't she accept that God's will is for her to be a wife and mother? Graham Ortmann loves Trina, but how can he possibly marry someone who is determined to go against the dictates of the Old Order Mennonite fellowship? Trina can never be happy if she is outside of God's will for her life. But which life will she choose-one with Graham or one in pursuit of her heart's calling?

This is such an awesome program. Post Crossing allows you to receive random address to send post cards to, and in return you will receive post cards from random people around the world. There's no fees associated with it, except for the cost of the postcards and postage. Which while yes, is a bit pricey for international, is still small compared to the enjoyment of random mail from around the world!!! :)

B90 Week Six Check-in

Well, here it is, week 6. I am 1 day behind. I was fully caught up on Tuesday, but had a busy day on Friday. Right now I am not planning to take it as a grace day unless I do not manage to get it caught up during the week.

Some of the interesting places I've been reading.
-Starbucks, I go there after work some days for some "me" time and read my daily reading there. Not that interesting I suppose.
-The backyard, being such a nice summer it's been a pleasure to take my Bible out back and read while watching the kids play, or even just out there with BFF.
-The office at home, I close my laptop and sit here and read at the computer a lot. It's one of the more convenient places.
-In the car, while waiting for people.
-At appointments, I do enough waiting at appointments, it's a good way to keep myself occupied.

Well, I have another busy day ahead of me!! :)

Book Review: Beginnings, Sommerfield Trilogy Book #1, by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Beginnings, Sommerfeild Trilogy Series #2, by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Challenges: 100+ Books, Support Your Local Library, The 2nd Challenge, Summer Reading Program @ The Library

A wonderful continuation to the Sommerfield Trilogy. It jumps a couple years from the end of the first book. It is a bit difficult at first to reconcile the ending of the previous book to the jump in time to the start of this book, with absolutely NO lead in to the shift. But quickly I became adjusted to it.

Beth has chosen to remain in Sommerfield and has found God and faith. She is not becoming Mennonite as her mother has, but she has found her way. She attends the Mennonite meeting house. It seems like a good middle ground for her. She is happy and has a Stained glass art studio that is starting it's way using her God-given talent. Before long a fabulous opportunity for her comes knocking, along with a man that just might be right. But complications with her mother's pregnancy may stop everything!

Bygones, Sommerfeld Trilogy Series #1, by Kim Vogel Sawyer

Challenges: 100+ Books, Support Your Local Library, New To Me Christian Author, First In A Series, Summer Reading Program

Okay, so with this book, this entire series, BFF read them first. She told me a lot of key details. Things that in some cases you would think, "why should I bother, I know how it turns out." But that is so not true, because it's NEVER the same as reading it, getting all the little nuances that the author places into the text. Feeling the raw emotions of the characters. Being a part of the twists and turns, the excitement.

That was how this was. Even though I knew key elements, I didn't know the details that went into them. Learning the details was the best part.

The quick synopsis of the book: Marie was raised Mennonite but fell in love with an outsider. She left the community, but not her faith, until her then husband died suddenly, leaving her pregnant and alone. When her baby daughter, Beth, was 2 weeks old, she returns home, only to be sent away, told she is not welcome because of her mistakes. At that time she sheds her Mennonite ways, clothing, and lifestyle, and proceeds to raise Beth in the outside world.

Fast forward 20+ years. Marie's favorite aunt left in the community, passes away, and Marie's old flame, Henry comes to tell her. And tell her about the will that was found. Seems that Aunt Lisbeth had left everything to Marie's daughter Beth, with a small stipulation. Beth must RESIDE in the home in Sommerfield for a period of three months before she can claim everything, or sell anything, which is all Beth wants to do. How will three months in Sommerfield effect them? And what about the family Marie left behind? And her faith?

To answer these questions, read this AWESOME book!
